How to get ready for Exchange Server 2013

Table of Contents

If your small business has made the decision to move to Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, there’s quite a bit to consider depending on your current environment. Here are a few items you’ll need to discuss with your IT administrator to make sure you’re prepared for a smooth transition.

Watch out for older versions of Exchange Server

If you’re still running Exchange Server 2003 or older in your environment, you’ll need to upgrade it to either 2007 or 2010 before moving to 2013. Exchange Server 2013 won’t upgrade from 2003, and it won’t work with other Exchange Server 2003 servers in your network.

Will you need new hardware?

Even if your server hardware can handle your current Exchange deployment, that’s no guarantee that Exchange 2013 will run as smoothly as it currently does. Take the time to go through Microsoft’s system requirements for Exchange Server 2013.

Do a run-through

Exchange Server 2013 is quite a bit different than prior versions, which means your migration is a bit more complicated than moving from, say, 2007 to 2010. Go through Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2013 Planning and Deployment page with a fine-tooth comb and compare each point with your current environment. Pay particular attention to server roles, public folders, licensing concerns and at how well-kempt your Active Directory currently is. This will give you a much clearer idea of what’s involved with making the switch.

Train, train, train

If you have an in house IT department, invest the time and money it takes to get them up to speed on Exchange Server 2013. If you outsource your IT, make sure the company you use is well-equipped to to handle this new version. You’ll be glad you did.
