We’ve already discussed the downside of storing your passwords in your browser. Essentially, it’s not a good idea since a thief could easily access any account you have saved in your browser. However, if you use Mozilla Firefox and save your passwords in it, using a Master Password will help protect your saved passwords. According to Mozilla:
A Master Password is used to protect sensitive information like site passwords. If you create a Master Password, you will be asked to enter it once per session when Firefox retrieves saved information protected by the password.
If you use Firefox, you absolutely must set up a Master Password. Here’s how to set up your Master Password:
- Open Firefox and open Preferences.
- Click Security.
- Check Use a master password.
- Enter your new password and click OK.
And that’s all there is to it! You’ll have to enter the Master Password the first time you use a saved password per session. You’ll also always have to enter the Master Password any time you wish to view your saved passwords.
If you want to sync your passwords between Firefox installations on different devices, click on the Sync tab in Preferences. Firefox will encrypt and sync your history, bookmarks, saved passwords and preferences between Firefox installations on different computers.
Please be sure to remember the Master Password you set because there’s no way to retrieve or reset it. Without the Master Password, you won’t be able to access any of the information protected by it.
