Which Microsoft 365 Plan Do We Need?

Five questions, then the mix of plans we would quote, with the reasons.

Basic, Standard, Premium: the short version

Microsoft 365 Business Basic gives a person email, Teams and the web and mobile versions of Word and Excel. Business Standard adds the installed desktop apps. Business Premium adds the security layer: Defender for Business, Intune device management and the conditional access rules insurers and auditors ask for. Above 300 users the enterprise plans apply.

Most companies do not need one plan for everyone. Office staff who live in Excel need Standard or Premium; a shop floor or a field crew that only needs an email address needs far less. The picker asks five questions and shows the mix we would quote.

Common questions about Microsoft 365 plans

Can we mix plans?

Yes. Each person has their own license, so a company of thirty might have twenty on Business Premium, five on Basic and five on a plain Exchange mailbox. The mix changes as roles change.

Does Business Premium replace antivirus?

It includes Defender for Business, which is capable endpoint protection. Most of our clients still add managed detection and response so that a person is watching the alerts at 2 a.m., and the two work together.

What happens above 300 users?

The Business plans are capped at 300 users per plan. Larger companies move to the enterprise plans, E3 and E5, which carry the same features in a different packaging. That is a conversation rather than a picker.
