IT Support for Manufacturers

Managed IT and cybersecurity for manufacturers.

Manufacturing IT is two environments that have to work as one: the office, with its email, ERP and accounting, and the plant floor, with CNC controls, PLCs, scales, label printers and scanners that were never designed to be on a network but are. OAC Technology has supported manufacturers across Minneapolis, St. Paul and Greater Minnesota since 2000, and we are audited under SOC 2 every year, which increasingly matters to the customers who audit you.

What makes manufacturing IT different

  • Downtime is measured in production, not in tickets. When the ERP or the network is down, orders stop, shipments slip and people stand around.
  • The plant floor runs on legacy systems. A CNC or inspection PC that still runs Windows 7 or XP cannot simply be upgraded; the machine it controls may be worth more than the building.
  • Operational technology and office IT share a network that was built one cable at a time, usually without segmentation.
  • Shifts do not keep office hours. Second and third shift need support too.
  • Customers audit you. OEMs, primes and larger customers send security questionnaires, and defense work brings CMMC.
  • Manufacturers are a preferred target. Manufacturing has been the most-attacked industry in IBM’s annual X-Force threat index for several years running, because attackers know a stopped line pays ransoms.

What our manufacturing IT support includes

Managed IT for the office and the plant

Help desk, monitoring, patching, servers and cloud under one flat monthly rate, with a dedicated technician who learns your operation. Remote support fixes most issues in minutes; on-site support covers the things that need hands, from a failed switch in a panel to a new workstation on the floor. See managed IT services for the full scope.

Legacy machines that cannot be replaced

We keep older control PCs running safely: isolated from the internet, segmented from the office network, backed up with a known-good image, and monitored. Our legacy operating systems support service exists for exactly this problem.

Network segmentation and plant-floor wireless

We separate office, plant, guest and vendor traffic so a phishing email in accounting cannot reach a machine controller, and we design wireless that actually covers a steel building full of interference, for scanners, tablets and mobile workstations.

ERP and line-of-business systems

Server, database and workstation support for the ERP your operation runs on, whether it is Epicor, NetSuite, SAP Business One, Global Shop, JobBOSS or something built in-house, along with the integrations to shipping, labeling, quality and accounting. When an ERP moves to the cloud, we plan and run the migration.

Servers, cloud and backups

Server support on-site or in the cloud, and offsite backups with encryption that meets SOC 2, HIPAA and NIST standards, tested so a ransomware event is a restore rather than a negotiation.

Phones, cameras and access

Hosted phone systems that work from the office, the floor and the truck, and the network foundation for cameras and door access systems.

Cybersecurity for a plant that cannot stop

Ransomware is the threat manufacturers actually face, and it usually arrives through email or a vendor’s remote access tool. Our managed cybersecurity services put layers in front of it: email filtering, multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection on every workstation and server that can carry it, 24/7 managed detection and response from a security operations center, managed firewalls with controlled vendor access, and network segmentation that keeps a compromised office PC away from the line. If an attack does get through, our ransomware remediation team isolates it and gets production back.

Compliance and customer requirements

Defense subcontractors and suppliers to primes now face the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification and its underlying NIST SP 800-171 requirements; our CMMC consulting service covers scoping, gap assessment, remediation and assessment support. Beyond defense, we help manufacturers answer the security questionnaires that OEMs and enterprise customers send, meet the IT controls that ISO 9001 and customer quality audits touch, and document it all. Because OAC Technology is itself audited annually under SOC 2, the “your vendors” section of those questionnaires has an answer.

Projects that come with growth

A new line, a second building, an ERP replacement, a robotics cell or an acquisition each bring a technology project. We scope, budget and run them so they land on schedule and do not sit behind daily tickets. For manufacturers that want a standing technology plan and budget, our vCIO service provides the leadership without the executive hire.

What manufacturing IT support costs

We price by device, not by employee, which suits a plant where forty people share six workstations. Workstations, older workstations, servers and printers each have a flat monthly rate, and the managed services pricing calculator will give you a ballpark in about a minute. There are no long-term contracts.

Serving manufacturers across Minnesota

From machine shops and metal fabricators in the northwest suburbs to food processors, plastics, electronics and specialty manufacturers across the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota, we support plants of one shift and three. 90% of our business comes through referrals, often from a customer or supplier who is already working with us.

Common questions from manufacturers

Can you support machines that run old versions of Windows?

Yes. Isolation, segmentation, imaging and monitoring keep them running and off the internet. Replacing the operating system is rarely the answer when the machine depends on it.

Can you support our ERP?

We support the servers, databases, workstations, network and integrations that your ERP depends on, and we work with your ERP vendor on the application itself.

Our biggest customer sent a security questionnaire. Can you help?

Yes. We map the questions to your actual controls, close the gaps, and help you answer accurately.

Do we need CMMC?

If you hold or subcontract on Department of Defense work and handle federal contract information or controlled unclassified information, yes, at Level 1 or Level 2 depending on the data. We will help you work out which.

Talk to an IT provider that has stood on a plant floor

If your last provider treated the shop like an office, call 952-548-5558 or contact us for a free consultation. We will look at both sides of your network and tell you plainly what we would change.
