Top New Features in Windows Server 2012

There’s a lot of buzz surrounding the recently-released Windows Server 2012, Microsoft’s newest server operating system. This week, we’ll be covering some of the more impactful new features, including virtualization, storage spaces, IP address management and more. While those features are certainly large improvements, Microsoft has listed over 300 improvements over Windows Server 2008 R2. Here, we’ll explore some of the highlights.

IP Address Management
Microsoft created a tool to help network administrators ditch the spreadsheets and text documents they were using to manually (and inefficiently) manage the network’s IP addresses.

Hyper-V Replica
Hyper-V Replica is Microsoft’s answer to the problem of disaster recovery preparedness. Replica allows for asynchronous virtual machine (VM) replication with both compression and encryption. With scheduling options and an easy-to-use wizard, your snapshot is never more than a couple minutes behind the VM.

GUI Toggle
In Windows Server 2008 R2, you had to choose between command-line only or full GUI at the time of installation. In Windows Server 2012, you can easily switch between the two after installation with a checkbox.

PowerShell cmdlets
PowerShell now ships with over 2,000 cmdlets, providing administrators plenty of automation tools out-of-the-box.

Server Manager
The new Server Manager now sports Microsoft’s clean Metro look. When a new server is added, Server Manager will scan the server and add a new tile to the dashboard, which displays the server’s status.

Increased Hyper-V Support
Hyper-V 3.0 is hot on VMware’s heels with added support of up to 4TB of memory, 320 processors, 8,000 VMs per cluster and up to 1,204 virtual machines per host. It adds support for SMB storage as well.
